Theophilus Concert- Saturday, Feb. 5th, 7-10pm
Youth Ministry Event! The band, Theophilus, will be in concert in our sanctuary this Saturday. Following the concert we will have pizza and pop available for both a $1 a piece. The "Truck Stop" will also be open after the concert if you would like to play pool or catch a movie.

Superbowl Party- Sunday, Feb. 6th, 4:45pm-end of game
Corry and Cynthia Holmes are hosting a church Superbowl Party at their home, 21945 County Road M.(http://mapq.st/fAJGh3). They have plenty of areas to watch the game from and children are welcomed. Everyone is welcomed to come and bring friends. If you are able, please bring a food item. Feel free to also bring whatever games and activities you would like.

The "Job Seeking Workshop Interest Meeting" that was scheduled for Monday, January 31st was rescheduled for Monday, February 28th from 6:30-8pm.

The Book Bug!

So after a year hiatus from even desiring to read a book the craving has come back. I'm not sure what happened for a year but I blame it on eight years of seminary. I read books, but only what I had to read for work and ordination stuff. I have three books I'm into now and one on the back burner.

The Hole in Our Gospel, by Richard Stearns: Richard is the President of World Vision. He is discussing the dissonance between a confessional Gospel that does not lead to Christian action. I'm only into the first chapter but so far he has shared his story of moving over from a prominent CEO position to become the president of World Vision. He is also describing a great need within our world that affluent Christians are able to hide from in the US.

Walking on Water, by Anthony De Mello: My mentor gave me this book and I am reading it with Brandon, my accountability partner. It's an awesome book that I want to read much faster but I told Brandon we'd read a chapter a week:) It's written by Anthony who was (deceased) an Indian (India) Christian spiritualist. He presents a Christian message through stories within other faith traditions. He is also focusing on the importance of meditation . . . so far.

Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Meg Meeker, M.D.: I started this book a long, long time ago but just recently had the gumption to pick it back up. I'm just a few chapters from finishing now. It's a great book about (you guessed it) fathers, raising daughters. Meg has some great insight as a counselor/doctor. I'll need to read it again in seven years.

Crazy Love, by Francis Chan: My wife's step-sister gave me this book for Christmas. It appears to be on the best seller lists (Christian and secular). It's on the back burner and next in line when I finish "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters".

Courageous Leaders

I must admit that I’m coming off a bit of a high after yesterday (Sunday, Jan. 16^th)! We had 114 in worship and around 25 kids upfront for the Children’s Time. We had a good amount of guests in worship as we have had for the last month or so. There are some really encouraging things going on in our church!

The Thursday before we had our first Council Meeting of the new year. We approved a new business meeting format for 2011 (see article “New Council Format) that will hopefully minimize the amount of evenings we spend on business and maximize time for ministry and relationships. Our Council Chairperson, Kim Kirby, started the meeting with a devotional from a book she recently read, “Courageous Leadership”, by Bill Hybels.

Courage happens to be a value of our church: Courage, Compassion and Honor. Leaders who lack courage are people-pleasers. They are very happy with the status quo and will very reluctantly do anything new that might upset the balance of satisfaction within their circle of influence. Leaders who are courageous have a desire to strengthen people, practice servant leadership and make hard decisions in order to further their cause or the cause of their organization/institution.

The cause of the church is to “make disciples and teach them to obey the commands of Jesus Christ” – Matthew 28:19-20. Any church with a vision or mission statement must contain that seed phrase somewhere within their statement. Adding anything more to it can almost endanger the most important aspect of it. As leaders of this church we must courageously and successfully go about this cause. So, what flags and alarms are going off in your head right now? What is more important to you than the mission of our church? Courage is setting that thing aside; leadership is helping others move their things aside and together we are the church captivated with Christ, moving courageously forward in his mission.

United Methodism has been declining fast for a long time. It's kind of like being on blood thinners and having a nose bleed; unless you get medical attention it's only a matter of time before you pass out. I am not fully ordained yet in the U.M. denomination and there have been a few times where I have strongly considered the fact that I am about to tie myself to the mast of a sinking ship. I did not grow up U.M. nor do I have any strong allegiance to the denomination through family or friends growing up.

I believe God has guided me towards the United Methodist Church and has called me to serve in a land (denomination) where I have no roots. After years and years of study, research and application I have become theologically U.M. This was not an easy process for me and I get very short with those who grew up U.M. and say that it all makes sense! It makes sense if you grew up in it but if you grew up in something very different (especially sacramentally) it takes a lot of re-learning to embrace theologically. However, we do have a phenomenal history and theology! We have some incredible building blocks that embrace a loving God and people of all backgrounds who are in desperate need of grace and friendship.

I believe the United Methodist church will experience renewal, but only after it hits rock bottom. It has to almost die in order for us to decide to reform The Book of Discipline and systems that worked well in the 1950's but not so much in 2010. According to this article we are finally getting close. Please pray for reform in our denomination. Pray that we will choose life, salvation and renewal and not limit ourselves to a heavy yolk that we have placed upon ourselves. After all, I'm pretty sure if John Wesley were here today he'd slap us around and give us a good scolding. And if that's Wesley, just think what Jesus would do:)?

People vs. Tasks

Some days I can't make up my mind: Am I a relational person or a task oriented person? I just finished a preaching series on relationships, yet it's very easy to forget their importance. As a small church pastor I have so many things that need to get done that no one else is going to get done, unless I delegate, but that's another blog. I guess that's one thing this pastor is learning from his community, the value of relationships. The value of stopping in for coffee or just catching up on life. To visit with someone is to let go of what's on your mind and lay it aside for the sake of the conversation; another valuable lesson. How much of what "has to get done" could really be laid aside? Is the "task" going to miss me if I don't visit; probably not? But a person will miss me . . . or you.

The Basement

So our air conditioner in the sanctuary went out last week. We didn't realize it until Saturday afternoon. I probably should have called someone to fix it then but I was worried about the weekend rates. Next time I'll make the call. It was so hot by 11am that I decided to move our traditional service to the basement (Fellowship Hall) for worship. I determined that most folks would be willing to make the change instead of sweating for an hour and I believe that was the consensus. What was surprising was how much people seemed to enjoy the closeness! We were a packed house in the basement and almost every seat was full. Some enjoy their space in the sanctuary, but most enjoyed a more intimate setting in the basement. This has really made me think about the importance of community on Sunday morning. So how many people do you think would throw a fit if I roped off the last three or four pews on Sunday morning?

God and Suffering

Death and suffering always bring up a lot of good questions about God and why bad things happen. Pastor Adam Hamilton of Church of the Resurrection recently did a sermon entitled "God and Suffering". If you are a podcast person you can go to the podcast area of iTunes and do a search on Church of the Resurrection or Adam Hamilton and find it. I listened to the podcast and found it profoundly helpful. Of course, when you are experiencing immense suffering and loss there are no appropriate answers that will remove your pain and make all things well. But with time comes opportunity to think and feel and heal. When you are in that place, Adam's sermon may be helpful to you.

Abby Cockrill Funeral Service Information

Abby Cockrill was killed in a car accident Sunday morning at 1:30am around the area of I-29 and 152 highway. Her friend, who was driving, escaped the accident with no injuries and they were both wearing their seat belts. The man who hit them did have a blood alcohol content well above the legal amount. Abby is the granddaughter of WUMC members Robert and Earlene Fulk and the niece of Dennis and Barbara Fulk. Abby’s parents, Diana and Pat, are members of the 1^st Christian Church in Platte City.

Abby’s visitation will be at 1^st Christian Church (708 3^rd Street) in Platte City tomorrow, Wednesday the 25^th from 6:30-8pm. Her funeral will be Thursday the 26^th, 10:30am at 1^st Christian Church. A grave side service will follow the funeral at Platte City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the 1^st Christian Church Youth Group or the Missouri Special Olympics. Please keep the Cockrill and Fulk families in your prayers.

Consistency

Life has been anything other than consistent this summer. I had two great vacations: one to Colorado with friends and another to Texas with family. VBS was great but it sucked the life out of me. I've had a couple weeks to commit to the office but they were full of planning activities. Then we had a week of great loss where two wonderful people were laid to rest who passed away in the same day. In all of the previous activities, a lot of regular visits to our elderly, sick and worship guests were minimized which is my focus this week. However, last week I decided that some things needed to be consistent again. So, little by little I'm gaining some ground with working out (biking, walking, weights), scripture reading, meditation/prayer, family time, reading and getting outside (even though it's bloody hot!). Remarkably enough, I'm starting to feel better. When we increase stress in our lives and decrease stress reducing activities we begin to feel bad. I had developed headaches and a lot of shoulder/neck pain along with needing more sleep. These are symptoms that something is wrong. So, I'm not surprised that when I've worked out the last five days and spent some time meditating and doing things that I enjoy that I feel better.
Now to personalize this. How do you feel? Have you missed consistency in areas of your life that help you feel better? Maybe it's time to work on some consistency with me:) Pick something small this week and experience a win for consistency next week! And let's pray for each other too:)

Too young to be so old!

Today is our third day of VBS at Weston UMC. It's been a great three days! Our leadership is fantastic and the kids are having a great time. Kim K. is so enthusiastic and passionate about our children and our church! She comes in with high energy every morning and leaves with high energy. I, on the other hand, dragged my tired rear into church this morning and dragged it out. I'm just amazed how much VBS is taking out of me this year! On my birthday in March this year I hit that magical age where I am no longer considered a young adult (36) as a Methodist pastor. Maybe I'm just acting my age for once:) Now if some of these older folks would stop running circles around me maybe I could be content in that???!!

Joe Taloff update

I just got off the phone with a member of Joe’s family. After over a week Joe is still unresponsive and his health has not improved. Tomorrow Joe will be taken off life support as he requested in his living will. He will move to a care facility tomorrow as well. Joe’s feeding tube was removed and he has also contracted pneumonia. The doctors have projected that Joe has days to weeks to live as a result of removing the feeding tube and the pneumonia. Please pray for Joe, Joan and all of Joe’s family during this very difficult time.

Joe Taloff update

Pastor Joe Taloff went into the hospital yesterday morning. He was restless through the night and was getting in and out of bed a lot. At one point he passed out and hit his head on the side of an end table. The blow to the head was minor and the doctors believe it didn't cause the damage that they found. The ambulance took him to St. Lukes Hospital on the Plaza where they found out he had a brain hemorrhage. They did surgery immediately in order to drain the blood that was pooling on the right side of his brain. This is Joe's second day in the NICU. He is currently being supplied air through a breathing machine and his nourishment through an IV. He has not opened his eyes yet or tried to talk but is slightly responsive when he is touched. A nurse asked him to squeeze her hand and he did so. Joan is holding on and had some health issues of her own the day before Joe's hospitalization. When I called this morning and spoke to Joe's daughter, Joan wasn't in yet so I'm hoping she got some rest. Joe's condition does not appear to be neither good nor bad. We won't know if he has any memory loss or loss of motor skills until he regains consciousness. Please continue to pray for him, Joan and their family

Memorial Day Weekend Party!

I've been working on my sermon calendar for the next year. I'm pretty excited with my plans so far. Thought I would share my overall themes and see if you all have any input. Let me know your ideas, illustrations or worship element suggestions!

Good Words in James
James will be a five week series on the the Epistle of James. James offers very straightforward concepts on the words we choose to use, not showing partiality and demonstrating our faith through our deeds (faith without deeds is dead!).

Vision
I have spent the last four months meeting with about half of our worshiping attendance in small groups for four weeks at a time. We brainstormed the following areas together: Intentional Discipleship, Missions, Evangelism/Growth and Short/Long Term Goals. I will spend four weeks revealing those results and offer a WUMC sized vision for tomorrow!

Relationships
Five weeks discussing the difficulties and keys for success in the following relationship situations: singleness, marriage, children, friendship and Christ. These areas are not completely solidified and I may tweek them:)

Give it Away
Even in recession, many are still living in abundance- but some are not. We will spend four weeks proposing different ways to "give away" our abundance. I'm thinking of focusing on the following areas: stuff, food and money (outside church/inside church). I'm hoping this will be a month to focus on Missions and all the ways we can serve and help. I also have a bombshell of an idea that I am hoping to reveal in September in preparation for this series!

Ruth
I read the Old Testament book of Ruth a few weeks ago and was absolutely floored! It's a beautiful story of God's provision and love; it's romantic, tragic and awe inspiring . . . and four chapters long.

Christmas Series
I don't know just yet- but it will be something Christmassy'. How about some help here!?

Romans
After Christmas we will begin the highly thought provoking New Testament book of Romans. It's 16 chapters long and will likely be our Lenten focus taking us to Easter. In Romans, Paul is writing to the Church in Rome that is no doubt experiencing growing pains. He painstakingly emphasizes the importance of grace by faith alone in Jesus Christ to a pagan culture. Romans will help deepen our Christian beliefs and stretch us in areas concerning God's sovereignty and our Jewish cousins (our faith relatives).

Vacation Over

Well, I had a good vacation. Had a few days around the house the beginning of the week. I did some fishing and relatively "bum" stuff. On Wednesday I headed for Arizona. I thought I had outsmart the flight industry. Tickets to Tucson were cheaper than tickets to Phoenix and the Tucson tickets stopped in Phoenix?! However, I found out that if you stop in Phoenix on the way out that they cancel your return tickets! So, after begging and pleading and not getting anywhere, my best friend in Phoenix drove two hours to Tucson to pick me up. It was mainly a "hangin'" out trip. I spent a lot of time with him (Phil) and his wife (Regina) and infant son (Mitchell). Last year I went up around this time because Mitchell was baptized and I am his godfather, so it was good to see he was growing quite nicely. Phil and I played 36 holes of disc golf and ate a lot- and that was the trip. On the way back to the airport he actually dropped me off in Tucson for my flight and beat me back to the Phoenix airport where we had breakfast together for my 2 hour lay over- I know, completely bizarre. When I got back on Saturday Kim and I went out and ate at Styx restraunt with some friends at the Legends. In the world of Japanese Steak Houses Styx was pretty average, but we still had a good time. On Mothers Day we visited "The Rock" church in N.K.C. It had a very modern worship facility and sound. They were incredibly well organized and reminded me a lot of a mini Willow Creek meets Word of Life. Of course I haven't been to Word of Life in six years so it could feel more like Willow Creek by now for all I know. After church we went and got Kim's Mothers Day gift since I didn't think about that until I got on the plane on Wednesday (although cards were taken care of). We bought some perfume and the nice gals at Dillards through in 3 freebies along with it! The real Mother's Day gift came when we got home and I cleaned out the garage. I think she has requested that one since November. It looks great now- I'll just walk into the garage and check it out:) And now- it's time to get ready for my last Pastoral Leadership Development class in Blue Springs. Back to the races we go!

Weston UMC State of the Union

On Sunday, April 18^th I gave two mini sermons during worship in order to address some different things going on in the life of our church; in other words, a state of the union address for Weston UMC. If you missed services that day, I’d like to update you on some very positive things going on in our church:

1) Walk to Emmaus: Kim and I both experience the Walk to Emmaus weekend retreat. It was a very positive experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is new to faith, needing some encouragement or faith answers, has recently gone through some traumatic life experiences, is spiritually dry or would like to grow some new friendships. It’s a great time and you won’t regret it.

2) Be who God has created you to be: All of you have been created by God with specific gifts and passions. Stop feeling the pressure to live into the molds that others create for you and learn to joyfully be who God has designed you to be.

3) Lay Preaching: I believe in the power of lay preaching and am encouraging people within our congregation to share their stories, passions and Biblical perspectives on life during Sunday morning worship. I believe the voices within the congregation are as equally powerful as the voice sent to minister to the congregation. Please support them with your attendance, prayers and encouragement.

4) Church Finances: A) In the last seven months our General Fund has grown from $2,500 to over $20,000. Your generosity has been overwhelming and this church is blessed because of it. B) Pennies from Heaven has given over $500 to four different individuals and 2 organizations in the last 2 months. C) Lately, many families/people have given generously to our church above and beyond their regular offerings. We have also become the benefactors of a life insurance policy left by Dorothy Voorhees who grew up here in Weston. We are waiting for a sum of $40,000 to arrive. D) With all that we have been blessed with, let’s remember that God calls us to serve and help. Let’s always experience tension between what we spend for ourselves and what we spend for others.

5) Spiritual Director Visits: I have had an increase in visits from individual and couples who would like spiritual direction. This is very positive and I would encourage anyone who desires such support to make an appointment for a visit.

6) How to Become a Member: If you would like to become a member of Weston UMC, please schedule an appointment with me.

7) Beware of Burnout: We have a lot of positive energy and many good things are going on. Make sure to stay spiritually healthy and as balanced in life as possible. Make a fair assessment of your church involvement and always communicate stress before the fall.

Spring, Easter Craziness

Praise the Lord, Spring is in the air! Yesterday I got bit by a mosquito, turned on the ac in the car and opened up the windows in the house. Today I wore sandals to work and saw turkeys frolicking in a field on my way to church. What a perfect week for Easter! I know that within me I have felt like something dead is coming alive. I have wanted to be outside so badly but it's been almost painful to try anything. But that has all changed- it was in the 80's yesterday! Alexis and I have been to the park two days in a row it's been so nice. Very soon I'll be mushroom hunting, fishing for crappie and hunting spring turkeys. If you want to spend some time with me just pick one and let's go do it:) Yeahhhh, Spring!

Youth Ministry

It was official last night- youth ministry on Sunday nights has arrived. We had eight (maybe 9?) students with us and four adult leaders. We had some great burritos that Dotty made along with a lot of chips, drinks and salsa that other church members brought. I led students in an exciting game of "smack another pool ball with another pool ball". I need a cooler name because it doesn't quite capture the intensity of the activity:) Our video series was pretty good and opened up unapologetically on all kinds of issues related to teens and peer pressure: drugs, sex, drinking, popularity. Nothing like starting out full throttle:) Eric did a good job transitioning students from the video and into discussion by sharing some of his own personal experiences. Overall, it was a great night and I look forward to seeing more students this Sunday night at 6:30pm! Count on dinner and fun:)

Book Review- Three Cups of Tea

So it has been a pathetically long time since I've read a novel. For the last eight years I've read an immense amount of books- primarily for seminary or ministry. Someone recommended the book "Three Cups of Tea" to me so I took her advice and read it. It's a fantastic book about a man with a great deal of passion and drive (true story). He demonstrates a rare ability- caring nothing for the superfluous things of life, but focusing solely on making lives better for others. He sacrifices personal comfort and personal gain in order to provide education to children (especially girls) who would not normally receive it in the Middle East. There is also an interesting under current in the book concerning the Muslim faith. It gives a refreshing view of the Muslim faith as a people that desire peace and love, which is a view we rarely see here in the US. However, there is at times conflict with the more radical sect of Muslims who promote violence and control. What was especially attractive to me about the book was the "outdoor" emphasis added since the individual was a mountain man! Overall, it is a very good book that I would recommend. It is inspirational and presents a challenge to those of us who are quite content living out Comfy Christianity.

What's Your Lenten Commitment?

This is my second opportunity to sink or swim with my Lenten Commitment. This year I chose to fast through Tuesday lunch and commit that time for prayer and meditation. Tuesdays are sermon preparation days, so it seems like a good day to stop after my study time for prayer and reflection. So we are in week number two, how are you doing with your Lenten Commitment?

Faith Community,

It’s with a very heavy heart that I announce Sue Norman’s death at 8:30am this morning. Paul and Sue’s sister in law, Joley, were by her side as she passed away in her home. The girls were also home and were able to give her a kiss this morning before she died. The Service date and time for Sue will be announced within the next several days. Please pray for the extended family as they travel to Weston today and tomorrow. Please also pray for Paul, Emily and Tori as they grieve heavily over the loss of an incredible wife and mother.

Ash Wednesday Service is this evening at 6:30pm in the sanctuary. It is a short service where we will have blended music, prayer, scripture, a poem by Betty Dover and receive the ashes. This service signals our repentant and humble entry into the Season of Lent.

Youth Ministry Interest Meeting (Sunday)
We will meet this Sunday at 6:30pm in the Friendship Hall to discuss the future of youth ministry at Weston UMC. If you are a Middle School or High School student, parent or volunteer leader you are invited to come and offer input as to how we can go about outreach and discipleship to our local youth.

Volunteer Ideas

I'm beginning to plateau time wise. This happens with just about every pastor I bump into. We eventually fill our plate too high with maintenance things. Things that a church volunteer could do, but sometimes we are just too afraid to ask someone else to do. So, bottom line, I need your help. There are two areas that I could use some help in. Let me know if you have gifts in these areas and time to give on a weekly basis:

1) Sermon Visual Aids Production
90% of the time my sermons are done by Tuesday evening. On Wednesday or Thursday I will create the powerpoint and study guide that is inserted in the bulletin. These two items normally take me 1-3 hours. If someone familiar with powerpoint could do
the construction I could highlight the material to be inserted.

2) Benevolence Case Worker
The church is receiving more and more requests from individuals everywhere for financial support and help. Some of these requests are legitimate and some are from individuals who make a living conning churches and people. More than a check, many of these individuals need to be resourced to agencies who can help on many levels. Someone who has a heart for the poor and has patience would find this a rewarding ministry and opportunity. The time commitment would vary from week to week.

Coyotes at the Parsonage and a follow up note about the 12 Hours of Prayer

I'm just amazed how we continue to see new animals in our backyard all the time. This morning we had a couple of coyotes walk up pretty close to the parsonage. Yesterday two different groups of dogs came through the yard as well. The first group was mutts and the second group was very nice looking hunting dogs that must have wondered off.
I also wanted to thank everyone who was able to attend the 12 Hours Of Prayer for the Normans on Saturday. I took the poster board sheets to them that many of you signed after church on Sunday. They really appreciated your prayers and the signed sheets- they are going to tape them up on the wall! The Day of Prayer was an amazing opportunity and we were blessed to have many folks all throughout our community participate. Thank you again!

12 Hours of Prayer for Sue Norman and Family

This Saturday (February 6^th) from 6am to 6pm the Weston United Methodist Church’s sanctuary will be open for prayer for Sue Norman and her family. Three weeks ago Susan stopped chemo treatments because of her weakened liver. Hospice is doing their best to make her comfortable as the cancer grows. Prayer is the greatest gift we can offer to Sue and her family. Everyone is invited to spend some time in prayer and meditation for the Normans in Weston United Methodist’s sanctuary this Saturday from 6am-6pm. The Normans are aware of the event and feel tremendously blessed to receive your prayers and love.

Completion of First Vision Group!

Yesterday we wrapped up the first Vision Group. They met once a week for four weeks in January. It was a phenomenal group of people who were full of great ideas and visions for the future of Weston United Methodist Church. All of them are spark plugs in our church and are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work for Christ in our community. If you haven't signed up for a Vision Group yet there is still time. This is an opportunity for everyone to share their input and ideas in order to shape the future of our church. The next group will start on Wednesday nights and run again for four weeks. In March they will meet on Sunday afternoons from 4-5:30pm. In April they will meet on Monday nights from 6:30-8pm. You can sign up outside the sanctuary anytime. Hope to see you there soon!

It was just about sundown on one of those really foggy days this week when I saw a kitty prowling in the backyard. Only this kitty was a little bigger than most and moved a little differently. He had a short tail and a white chest and could jump very high. What do you think- bobcat or kitty?

Lord,
This morning I lift up my suffering friends. Please continue to give Sue courage and strength. Allow her to give all the love she can muster to her family and to rest herself sufficiently. Father, please give your daughter peace, joy and faith despite her slowly failing body. As Tori and Emily are in school today, help them to enjoy their friendships and receive love from others. Holy Spirit, please walk with them and give moments of comfort amongst a time of chaos and fear. Continue to give strength to your son, Paul. Give him guidance and knowledge in the days and weeks ahead. Give him clarity as he cares for his family and makes the best decisions he can amongst deep pain and loss. Be with their extended families as they travel back and forth to visit and offer support- please keep them safe. And Lord, comfort the Weston community as they grieve and hurt for this family. Store up within us an enduring care and love as our time to help will last for months, years and lifetimes. We need your help Lord! Be with our friends and give them everything they need to sustain the day.

The Normans-Prayer Request

I spoke with Paul Norman this morning. Susan's liver is beginning to shut down and therefore she can't receive any more chemo treatments. Without chemo treatments the cancer will take over her body at a quick rate. The doctors believe she has days to weeks to live at this point. Her extended family is coming into town soon to be with her during this extremely difficult time. Paul is preparing an email that will go out to everyone on the church email list soon. Please pray for the Normans and for the safe arrival of their families in the days to come.

So here is the plan. I'm going to run over to the church around noon and scatter ice melt all over the walkways and parking area. I'm also going to do the same at the parsonage so I can get out of the driveway tonight. If all of that ice melt does what it is supposed to do I will be very hesitant to cancel service tonight. If it is the perfect storm, than I will update my facebook profile, do a cancellation blog, send out an email to the email list and if I can get to the church I will change the phone message and put up a sign. But, like I said before, the plan is Christmas Eve Service at 6pm at Weston UMC. Our family looks forward to seeing you all tonight!

Adam Hamilton at Church of the Resurrection (United Methodist) just finished a great sermon series that addresses the financial crunch that many of us have experienced first hand. His sermons address greed, evil, consumerism, relationships and the love of things (there's a word for that, I just can't remember it). Giving away hobbies for Christmas

I've realized lately that I have too many hobbies! I've spoken to a couple of people lately who have realized that they need one. Hobbies are good for a lot of reasons. They help with stress by distracting us from the difficulties of life and work. We hopefully get excited when we have opportunities to do our hobby. Sometimes a hobby can help keep us physically fit. Overall, hobbies can be a healthy part of life. Christmas is always difficult because I can't figure out what items to ask for because of all my hobbies. Prayer Request- Calissa H.

Last night I went to Childrens Mercy Hospital to visit with Cindy H. Corry and Cindy's daughter, Calissa, went back into the hospital because of a bowel obstruction. She had surgery again and is recovering. They are hoping she will get to come home today. Please continue to pray for Calissa and her recovery.

Genesis 15:17> A New View!

So I downloaded an app on my iphone that allow me to do a daily reading plan. Since I'm only a couple weeks into it I'm in Genesis. While reading Genesis 15:17 a couple of days ago I had an "aha" moment. Scripture is cool like that, it will never cease to surprise you if you commit to being a life long student of it.

In 15:17 God is proving to Abram that he will be a father of many nations. He also tells Abram that his descendants will be in captivity for 400 years but they will eventually escape and go to a land that will be their own. In order to prove His power, God asks Abram to cut a bunch of cattle in half and lay them "half over against each other". Later that night God has a torch and a smoking pot travel between the two lines of slaughtered animals; through the blood. Now this sounds familiar, doesn't it?! Later in Exodus, the Hebrews escape Egypt. God was present with them as a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of smoke by day. Now maybe I'm reaching but do you see the similarity: smoking pot=pillar of smoke and torch=pillar of fire?

Now the theological similarity. With Abram a covenant was made as the fire and the smoke passed through the blood. With Moses the people were saved as the fire and smoke passed through the water. God made a covenant through the blood and saved them through the water. Almost 2000 years later Jesus saved us through the shedding of his blood and gave us the waters of baptism as a sacrament of salvation- through the blood and the water (also check out 1 John 5:6-8).

So, here are the symbols through out scripture that are full of power: smoke, fire, blood and water. What kind of emotions and memories do these symbols evoke for you?

My Weekend in Greensburg and The Combined Service

Here is my hole. Three feet deep and three feet across. I drove over to Greensburg, Kansas with Pat last Thursday. We met with Rogers and his son and son-in-law for a solid day of work. I dug a hole for concrete, chipped concrete corners, unloaded a lumber truck and helped put a roof on a room. So, when I challenged you all (WUMC) to get dirty for the Gospel, you can see I meant it:) There will be other opportunities to go and help the town that was devastated by a mile long tornado two years ago. Take the opportunity, you won't be sorry. I'll show more pictures this Sunday at the COMBINED (10am) SERVICE this Sunday. Remember to bring some food for the Pot Luck after wards as well- I'll be hungry after stuffing myself all week:) Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Prayer Request- Paul M.

Today while I was at Rotary, Paul M. who attends Holy Trinity Catholic Church had a heart attack. It was a pretty scary deal, but luckily there was a trained, professional medic available. We called 911 and the ambulance came and rushed him to the hospital. I spoke to Father Charles a while ago and he said Paul received a pace maker today and should be out tomorrow. Wow! How's that for pronto!! Please pray for Paul and his recovery.

Ministry can be a lot of work. Sometimes it's a lot of work for not a lot of results. I don't operate well that way. I'm admittedly very reward oriented. A few things have come together lately that feel very rewarding and they all involve leadership. Linda Scouby did a great job this weekend as our new Volunteer Coordinator. I'm very excited about Linda's commitment to volunteerism. This week's new news began on Monday with a phone call from Kim Kirby. Kim agreed to be our Church Council Chair! Kim is ministry driven and I believe she will do a great job as our new Council Chair. The third surprise came after a meeting with one of our high school students. We decided we needed to move forward on organizing youth ministry even though we hadn't received another two adult leaders. Kylee has a strong faith life and even though she is in high school, she feels ready to be a leader to her peers. However, she also would love to have adults join her in leading and loving our teens. Which made last night even more amazing when Rogers Strickland let me know that he wanted to help with our Youth Ministry next year!
In the words of Hannibal on the A-Team, "I love it when a plan comes together"! Remember, nothing happens without leadership. Thank you to those who are stepping forward and picking up the scepter of leadership:)

What is Charge Conference?

WUMC Charge Conference- Tonight at 6pm (Dinner) and 7pm (Meeting)

I've had many folks ask me the question lately, "What is Charge Conference"? And that is a very good question. As a new lead pastor, I've been asking myself that a lot lately. Actually, I just took 10 minutes and looked up "Charge Conference" in the United Methodist Book of Discipline. Here is the best synopsis sentence I found,
"The primary responsibilities of the charge conference in the annual meeting shall be to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the church, receive reports, and adopt objectives and goals recommended by the church council that are in keeping with the objectives of the United Methodist Church." - p. 160, 2008 Book of Discipline
Tonight we are going to have fellowship. We will eat together, approve a few things and hear from our District Superintendent and Bishop (via video). It's a good time to get together and pray for our local church, our denomination and our global faith. I hope to see you tonight for my first Charge Conference as WUMC's pastor:)

Charge Conference- Wednesday the 4^th

Be here at 6pm for the Potluck Dinner. We will have turkey along with what other delicious side dishes you bring along as well. Our District Superintendent, Susan Cox, will join us for dinner and the evening. After dinner, we will have the business section of the evening and watch a video message from our Missouri Bishop, Robert Schnase. This is an annual time of celebration and fellowship for our church- hope you can join us!

Campout at the Stricklands’ – Friday the 6^th and Saturday the 7^th

It is going to be a beautiful weekend- 70’s and sunny! Come out Friday night for a bonfire and hayride around 6pm. Feel free to stay in the Stricklands’ lodge or campout next to the pond! We will have breakfast and a time of worship and devotion Saturday morning. We will have breakfast (pancakes) between 8am-9am and worship/devotion shortly after. Feel free to go on a hike or fish in the pond the rest of the morning.

Stewardship Series- Volunteerism: An Inward Focus- Sunday the 8^th

A Combine and Stewardship

I just finished up my first sermon for our Stewardship Series that begins this Sunday. I worked on my sermon from home this morning so I could have a view. Sometimes having an office with no windows makes me feel a little confined. While I was working on my sermon I heard a loud humming sound. I looked out the corner of the window and I could (still can) see a large combine beginning to harvest the neighbor's corn field.
How interesting that while I am working on the Stewardship Sermon series that the corn in the backyard would be harvested. The neighbors could have left the corn there. They could have spent all that time, energy and money in planting and caring for the corn and then watch it die. But instead they are harvesting it so that they and others will experience the flavor and nourishment of tasty corn. You see what's coming next, right?
I guess God could give us all gifts, resources, relationships and abilities and never expect to harvest those things, right? Maybe God just wanted us to look cool and that was it. Or, maybe God has an expectation? Maybe God desires a harvest from his investment? Consider it- metaphorically at least. I don't want anyone running over to my house and jumping in front of the combine!

The Gospel of John- 2 endings?

Yesterday at the 9am service I mentioned that I would blog on John's 2 possible endings, since I was short on sermon time. John 20 ends with this verse, "But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name." That seems like a really good ending, right? The resurrected Jesus appears to the disciples in the Upper Room, has a good talk with Doubting Thomas, and moves on. But then there is chapter 21. My primary commentary (Beasley-Murray) indicates that John 21 was possibly added later as an addendum. This could have been done by the original author, John, or by one of his disciples. John 21 does feel different from the rest of the Gospel if you read it in entirety. However, 300 years later, all 21 chapters of John are canonized at the Council of Laodicea and included in the first Christian Bible. So, whether it was a part of the original text or added later, it is still a part of a holy document that God and the Church saw fit for Christian history and education. Just a little canon FYI:)

Book Update- "Direct Hit"

I'm taking a Pastoral Leadership Development class that our United Methodist Conference is offering. We read a different book every month. This month we are reading "Direct Hit" by Paul D. Borden. It's a book about Leadership and Communication. I'd invite you to get it and read it with me. The most insightful quote from Chapter One is "Healthy congregations are outward-focused, and they maintain that focus against tremendous forces that are constantly encouraging an inward bent. Such congregations are led by leaders who regularly implement change. Such leaders create an environment where change becomes the norm and maintaining the status quo is unacceptable."
While I worked at Starbucks change was always a part of the game. They were changing things every 3-4 months. No one really liked it, but we knew that was part of the job so eventually we got used to it. I'm not sure I can imagine a church like that, but that is what Borden seems to promote. There would definitely be positives and negatives to that perspective. More to come later.

"Glee" Show

Finally, a tv show that Kim and I both enjoy. Actually, a lot of people enjoy it. I think when something begins to be a cultural phenomenon, we should all pay attention. Just watch the itunes top 25 chart on Thursdays and you can see what type of immediate impact this tv show is having. I admit, it is a little edgy when it comes to its sexual overtones- but look at what its about- high school. I've noticed with every episode it is pushing that envelope a little harder, so be warned.
I do like the message that it is advocating. In an age of school shootings and internet bullying, Glee's message is that being cool is overdone. What really matters is friendship, sacrifice and commitment. The lines of "who is cool" becomes blurred when football players and cheerleaders are also doing show choir. And since I had a lot of good friends that were in show choir in high school, I find the tension especially hilarious! As far as the plot, I'm just glad someone was paying attention when former "Doogie Howser" star, Patrick Harris, put out the "for internet only" show named "Dr. Horrible's Sing A Long Blog" a couple years back. The show was very similar with it's musical theme and was insanely popular for something that never aired on tv. So, what else have you learned about our culture by watching "Glee"?

Solo Retreat to Eureka Springs

Got away for a few days last week. I try to unplug for 48 hours about once a month in order to recharge the fuel cells. I find the outdoors very serene and peaceful, no matter what time of the year. For some reason I especially love the cold as well. I packed up and headed for Eureka Springs, Arkansas last Thursday. I fly fished for trout on Beaver Creek on the other side of Beaver Dam. I did pretty well! I also read about 20% of the Psalms in preparation for the Psalms Sermon Series as well. Overall, it was a very fun, relaxing trip! Apple Fest!

For my family, this will be our first Weston Apple Fest. Kim, Alexis and I are looking forward to helping the church sell pies and the community sell apple-butter. My newest edition to my book list is "Eight Life-Enriching Practices of United Methodists" by Henry (or Hal) Knight. Hal is a professor at St. Paul Seminary in K.C. and is a fantastic Wesleyan theologian! I'm into the third chapter of his book and already finding it very beneficial. If you are looking for a book on spiritual disciplines and spiritual formation, I would recommend Hal's "Eight Life-Enriching Practices of United Methodists". I even have an extra copy:)

Feeding the Angel, Purging the Demon

Simple, regular practices make us healthier people. I'm attempting to create two morning practices that make me a healthier person; I like to think of it as Feeding the Angel and Purging the Demon. I try to spend some time during each day in prayer, meditation, scripture or other growth focused reading; this is how I feed my angel (so to speak). I also try to exercise almost everyday. The picture is of the home gym in my basement that my brother's, father-in-law graciously gave to me. I rotate weights with mountain biking during the week. When I do this I discipline my body, push it hard, focus my energy and purge my demon (so to speak- again). Both of these practices help me with stress management and creating a more peaceful me. How do you feed your angel and purge your demon?

We will wrap up our series on the Gospel of John at the end of October and begin a new series. In November we will begin to talk about Stewardship which is an essential part of discipleship. A healthy church thrives on disciples who are committed to regular stewardship practices. Youth BBQ Event

We had another good night at the parsonage. Our high school and middle school students came over for a BBQ. Other than getting beat in a game of corn hole, I had a great time as well. We spent some time talking about the future of youth ministry at WUMC. I'm impressed by the things our youth said were important to them. At the top of the list were mission events and meeting on a regular basis on Sunday evenings for fellowship. So, what we need are adults who are willing to pull alongside our teens. People who will care about the lives of our teens, pray with them and mentor them. Could this be you? We should talk soon:) By the way, Cody sank 4 bags in the hole in a row (see the little hole by his leg in this pic)! Never seen that done before- pretty amazing! Labor Day!

Discipline

I've been thinking about "Discipline" lately. I think discipline is doing the most important things consistently. It's easier to do all the other stuff than the most important stuff. I think greatness is unattainable without discipline. You can't lose weight unless you workout and diet (the pills don't really work). You can't learn unless you pick up the book and read. You can't become an expert unless you spend a lot of time in the trade. Discipline is doing the most important things over and over and over again. Isn't it interesting that many of us call ourselves "Disciples". Do you think there's a comparison there?

I haven't blogged about office hours and stuff like that yet. My normal practice is to set aside Tuesday for Sermon Preparation. I will attempt to avoid meetings, phone calls and other items on Tuesday - except for this blog, of course:) I normally come in, clean off my desk, check my email and go to town- which is what I'm going to do now.

Addition to Book List

My book list has changed a little bit. I finished Thomas Merton's "Spiritual Direction and Meditation" and began "The Brother Lawrence Collection". Merton's book was a quick read and very enjoyable. He poses many challenging thoughts on discipleship, meditation and mentoring. I would highly suggest it if you are interested in those topics. Brother Lawrence was also a Monk who experienced the "Presence of God" in incredible force while he did his mundane kitchen duties at his monestary. I'm currently reading the letters he sent to those he was mentoring or encouraging. This morning I particularly enjoyed the following quote, "Be not discouraged by the repugnance which you may find in it from nature; you must do yourself violence". Brother Lawrence is addressing our sinful nature and believes that we should attack and hate it with all that we are. I believe whole heartedly in that statement. It's only by hating our sin that we can embrace the teachings of Jesus. Do you hate your sin?? Maybe it's time to do violence to it?

Prayer Request- John Hartley

I received a call tonight that John Hartley had a major stroke while on a trip to British Columbia. He is currently in critical condition. Jean and her daughters left for British Columbia today or yesterday (not positive as to which) to be by his side. Please keep the Hartley family in your prayers during the next few critical days.

Back from Vacation

You can't see me very well, but you can probably see the attractive man in a dress next to me. At Silver Dollar City they believe strongly in hospitality. This nice man greeted us on the way out. We had a great family trip. We camped out for five nights and five days at Table Rock State Park. Camping out is a great way to bond with the family. You can't get much closer then a three person tent. We are always on the lookout for other campers. Is anyone up for a camping weekend? Maybe we could all converge on a spot close to home for a night. Let me know what you think.

What a community!

What a community! On Sunday afternoon this sign showed up on our front lawn. Someone was kind enough to leave a sign welcoming our daughter to her first day of kindergarten. This object of kindness really helped my daughter get excited for her first day because "West Platte Loves You"! It's a lot easier to go somewhere new when we know someone loves us there. I know my daughter's school has challenged me as a Christian. Do I help make our church a place where people know they are loved before they walk in the door? What are some ways we could let people know they are loved before they ever step foot in Weston UMC? I guess we have to remember that being welcoming and invitational isn't someone else's job, it's our (you and me) job. Thanks West Platte!
